Make Your iPhone Secure and More Useful With These Simple Tweaks

If you own an iPhone, you know how useful the device can be. From getting turn-by-turn directions for those long road trips to texting with your friends to reserving a table at your favorite restaurant, there is not much your iPhone cannot do.

But just because your iPhone is incredibly useful doesn’t mean it cannot be made even better. With a few simple tweaks, you can extend your battery life, make your iPhone more secure and check your messages without disturbing people around you.

Create a Better Password

When you set up the passcode on your iPhone, you probably used the simple passcode option. This option is the easiest, and it may seem like a 4-digit code is secure. But when you think about it, you will see that there are far better options.

It only takes a minute for a would-be thief to look over your shoulder and watch as you type in your code. It takes even less time for someone to guess a commonly used numerical combination – like your birthdate or street address.

You can create a better passcode, and a safer iPhone by going to Settings, choosing Touch ID & Passcode and turning off the Simple Passcode option. From there you can tap the Turn Passcode On option and enter a stronger 6-digit passcode.

Check Your Phone Without Bothering Others

If you have an iPhone, chances are you check it all the time. Even if you are in a movie theater or a crowded restaurant, the temptation to check your email, read your text messages and browse your photos is really strong.

Even so, you know that checking your phone could disturb your fellow diners or moviegoers. You could try turning down the brightness or contrast, but that would just make reading the screen more difficult.

Fortunately, Apple gives you a way to check your phone unobtrusively, without bothering those around you. This little-known feature is called Invert Screen Colors, and it is extremely useful in all kinds of social situations.

Turning on Invert Screen Colors could not be easier. Just go to Settings, browse to the General section and choose Accessibility and turn on the Invert Colors option. Now you can check your phone to your heart’s delight without being “that guy” at the restaurant or theater.

Save Your Battery with Airplane Mode

Even many experienced iPhone users do not know that activating Airplane Mode is a fast and simple way to preserve battery life. If your battery is draining fast and you still have calls to make, turning on Airplane Mode can give you time to complete your business, or at least find your charging cable.

To turn on Airplane Mode, just go to Settings. Airplane mode is right at the top of the screen, and you can turn it on with the tap of a button. Once Airplane Mode is activated, your iPhone will automatically turn off Wi-Fi, cellular services, Bluetooth and other battery-draining features. This simple tweak can give you more talk time and make your iPhone more useful.

The iPhone is one of the most useful inventions of the last decade, but that does not mean it cannot be made even better. The simple tweaks listed above can help you get more out of your phone and avoid common annoyances.
